Mercedes Schlapp's job as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the advisor to strategic communications for the White House. Schlapp has kept her focus all the time, working closely White House policy and political teams, along with the legislative affairs team and shops. The focus has been on matters such as the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. She does not interact much with the media in her job. The media spotlight was on her in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job as White House's strategic communications advisor. She's faced with a president that acts as his own communication director and a myriad of legal disputes that can throw off the White House's strategy for messaging as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversy. Schlapp has been keeping an eye on the target, and has been coordinating policies along with White House staff from the political and legislative affairs team and the policy shop, in addition to broader communication. So far, her primary focus has been issues such as school safety and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade, as well as other topics. In her current position the director does not interact too much with journalists. The month of March was when she received some media attention when her name came up as a potential candidate to succeed Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. The fight turned ugly. Schlapp allied with Tony Sayegh who was also running for office. They started fighting in media. Schlapp claimed that after the Washington Examiner ran a story with negative remarks about Sayegh she sat down for a chat with him.
